Duty & Valor - Military Stories of Courage and Sacrifice

Laurence Tureaud aka Mr. T served in the Army in the 1970's

Laurence Tureaud, who we would all get to know as Mr. T, was raised in the Southside of Chicago. A gifted athlete, he earned a wrestling scholarship to Prairie View A&M University in Texas before dropping out and enlisting in the Army in 1975. Stationed at Fort McCoy, he served in the Military Police Corps and was a squad leader. An often told story says that in 1976, Mr. T committed a minor infraction, so his platoon sergeant thought he would teach him a lesson. Given an ax, he was told to chop down trees. After about three and a half hours, the platoon sergeant checked on him and saw that he had chopped down approximately 70 trees. He then immediately took the ax away from him. He was discharged from the Army in 1978 and became a bouncer. After appearing on the show “America’s Toughest Bouncer”, he was cast as Clubber Lang in Rocky III by Sylvester Stalone, thus launching his acting and wrestling career.
