On October 28, 1951, First Lieutenant Lloyd Burke displayed exceptional courage during a brutal engagement in Korea. Although he had a plane ticket home and wasn’t required to fight, he chose to lead from the front. Single-handedly assaulting three enemy bunkers with grenades, an M1 rifle, and a pistol, Burke eliminated the enemy crews and inspired his pinned-down company to advance. When the attack stalled again, he grabbed a light machine gun and ran through open fire to a knoll, unleashing a storm of fire that killed over 100 enemy troops and destroyed multiple positions. Despite being wounded, Burke continued to press the attack, leading his outnumbered force to seize their objective. For his extraordinary heroism, 1LT Burke was awarded the Medal of Honor.
