On July 11, 1969, during a fierce battle in Vietnam, Specialist 4 Gordon Roberts of Company B, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, faced a mission that was on the verge of collapse. His platoon was halted by intense automatic-weapons and grenade fire from fortified bunkers perched on higher ground—blocking their advance and trapping a nearby friendly company.
Realizing the urgency, Roberts crawled forward through enemy fire, then rose and charged the first bunker—eliminating its defenders. Without stopping, he attacked a second position, even after enemy fire destroyed his weapon. He grabbed a rifle from a fallen comrade and pushed on—destroying that bunker and two more, single-handedly.
Roberts continued beyond his platoon’s line to assist wounded men from an adjacent company, evacuating them under fire before returning to his unit.
For his fearless and decisive actions, Gordon Roberts was awarded the Medal of Honor.
