On April 2, 1972, Captain John Ripley faced a mission that could determine the outcome of the battle.

As North Vietnamese armored forces advanced toward Dong Ha, it became clear that the enemy could not be stopped unless the bridge spanning the river was destroyed.

With enemy troops closing in, Ripley climbed beneath the bridge and moved hand-over-hand along its steel beams to reposition 500 pounds of explosives.

Under constant fire and physical exhaustion, he crossed the bridge multiple times, securing the charges where they would do the most damage.

When the work was complete, he detonated the explosives and destroyed the bridge—halting the enemy advance and helping prevent the fall of Dong Ha.

For his extraordinary heroism, John Ripley was initially awarded the Navy Cross, later upgraded posthumously to the Medal of Honor.
