On May 8, 1970, during the Vietnam War, Lance Corporal Miguel Keith was serving as a machine gunner with Combined Action Platoon 1-3-2 when a massive enemy ground assault hit their position.
Gravely wounded in the opening moments of the attack, he could have stayed down. But he didn’t.
Instead, Lance Corporal Keith crossed open terrain under fire, checking defensive positions and bringing his machine gun into action, delivering punishing fire on the advancing enemy.
When five enemy soldiers moved toward the command post, he charged forward alone, killing three and scattering the rest.
A grenade exploded near him, inflicting further devastating wounds. But Keith stood again. Despite extreme pain and blood loss, he launched a final solo charge against an estimated 25 enemy troops, killing four and forcing the rest to retreat.
He was mortally wounded in the process. His courage broke the enemy assault and saved lives.
For his extraordinary heroism and sacrifice, Lance Corporal Miguel Keith was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
